Improv Workshop: Patterns

Workshop Description:

As human beings, we tend to get caught up in the same kind of situations, behaviours or, some may even dare to tell stories. We then spend quite some time analyzing all the factors that led us to that same spot we keep returning to. If we translate this into a performative context, as improvisers we are constantly trying to establish patterns in order to make our lives on stage easier. We embrace them, happy to have something to play with. Happy to use the safety net they bring in a scene. But! Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? As we get stuck in life we get stuck on stage. Our patterns become our frustrations and in some cases, are preventing the performer to grow and explore more. In the workshop we will strive to overcome or at least acknowledge the patterns that we bring into the group and the patterns that the group is producing as a collective. We will then try to break, transform or indulge in these patterns, celebrate them and play with them. The aim of the workshop is to give you tools on how to look for patterns on an individual and collective level.

About Sara Šoukal:

Sara Šoukal (Slovenia) is a seasoned theater artist with years of experience. As an actress and a pedagogue she is most active in the field of theatrical improvisation, which she says is her first love. She fell in love with improv when she was 9 years old and they have been together ever since. Her improv aesthetic is poetic, physical, dream-like, and full of details. Nothing escapes her eye. She tends to break patterns, she challenges herself and others with bold offers that are out of the box. She is determined to put improvisational theater on the map of theatrical sub genres as an established and recognized performative art. Lately, she has been setting her foot in other performative fields with great joy and interest. She has been flirting with street theater, devised theater, contemporary dance, object theater and clowning. She is one of the most active and prominent improvisers in Slovenia, working also abroad, as part of many impro collectives, theaters and associations.

Improv Labs

Improv Labs are one-off, open events where everyone, regardless of experience level, can participate and practice improv. Labs are less structured than classes, target a specific theme and focus on exploring different styles of play, new techniques and spontaneous fun! Labs are free for FIry members!
